Xbox’s Phil Spencer acknowledged the possibility of future price increases, and shortly after, Microsoft announced it would raise prices for new, first-party games to $70.
While Xbox Game Pass’ price has remained stable in recent years, it is expected that the $14.99 price point for Game Pass Ultimate may not last forever. This plan was tested in multiple countries last year and may become one of the upcoming features for the service. Microsoft is testing a new Xbox Game Pass Friends & Family Plan, which would enable subscribers to share a subscription with up to four additional friends or family members. However, no details have been provided about potential new marketing strategies for Game Pass subscriptions. Perez stated that Microsoft is “evaluating different marketing promotions for new members in the future.” Xbox head of global communications, Kari Perez, confirmed the discontinuation of the $1 trial in a statement to The Verge. The company is currently exploring alternative marketing promotions for new members.
The promotion, which has been a cornerstone of the service since its inception, allowed new subscribers to try out Xbox Game Pass for one month before being billed at the standard monthly subscription rate. Microsoft has discontinued the popular $1 introductory trial offer for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscriptions. Microsoft faces tough competition in the gaming subscription market from other major players such as Nintendo and PlayStation, and effective marketing strategies are crucial in order to stand out in an increasingly crowded market.
